Maricopa County Asthma Coalition

The Coalition is a group of stakeholders that have come together to work in a collaborative effort to promote, preserve and protect the respiratory health of people living with asthma in Maricopa County by improving the quality of life. More information

 
  • Arizona has one of the highest asthma rates in the country
  • 82,635 Maricopa County Children have active asthma
  • 600,000 (2004) Arizonans live with asthma
  • 3,704 Maricopa County children were hospitalized due to asthma in 2004
  • Untreated Asthma may result in permanent lung damage even death
 

JOIN US to insure that everyone with Asthma can learn, work, play and sleep like everyone else.

The coalition believes that it should not hurt to breathe and is committed to programs and projects that make it a little easier for people to breathe.

Our Major Programs

Head Start—Asthma Screening and Education has been one of the major coalition’s focuses for the past three years. The Coalition partners with City of Phoenix Head Start to provide asthma screening, asthma education for teachers, children and parents in 123 head start classrooms serving over 2,000 Children.

   
 

 

Air Quality Flag Program – Air Quality is a major concern in Maricopa County and has been identified by the Coalition as one of our major focuses. The coalition in partnership with Roosevelt School district has developed an innovative Air Quality Flag Program which monitors and informs students, parents and community members about daily air quality that may impact health.

   

Let Us Breathe Campaign partners with Clean Air organizations and agencies as well as schools to raise awareness as to the issues regarding indoor and outdoor air quality on the respiratory health of people in Maricopa County. Press release

   

Online Newsletters – Asthma and air quality information targeted at parents, teachers, school nurses and other professionals will be implemented in spring of 2007. Initial focus will be on air quality issues and its relationship to children’s respiratory health.

Community Activities - The Coalition participates in numerous community health fairs and other community activities to educate the public on prevention, management and treatment of Asthma.

   

Advocacy Activities – The coalition has been active in several advocacy issues including smoking initiatives and the First Things First initiatives in the last election. Coalition members continue to be active in implementation of the smoke free initiative, funding for early childhood education/health care as well as issues around air quality.
